Frequently Asked Questions
What is VoIP?
VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over IP. In layman’s terms, it means voice over the Internet. Just as the compact disc contains music converted to a digital form, VoIP is the conversion of your voice, in real-time, to a digital signal. This signal starts at your phone, crosses the Internet to someone else’s phone, and then is converted back to analog sound for the other person to hear it. This all happens lightning fast as you have a normal conversation.
Can anyone use VolP?
While many people can use VoIP, not everyone qualifies. The #1 required is a fast and stable Internet connection. Users on dial-up or low speed DSL connections can not use VoIP. However, if you have a high-speed connection powered by a cable provider or fiber optic connection, you most likely qualify.
How do I know if I qualify?
Just give us a call and we’ll ask you a few questions about your current phone system, your Internet access and what you want to accomplish by using voice over IP technology. From there, we’ll let you know if Voice Over IP is a good fit for your business.
If I switch to Telepath, can I keep my phone numbers?
Yes. Just like when you change cell phone providers and take your number with you, we will accomplish the same thing. Having said that, you might not need to keep all of the numbers. For example, in a small office of 15 people, you might have 7 phone lines. Typically this is one “main line” and 6 “roll over” numbers.
In the world of voice over IP, we don’t need the roll over numbers to accomplish the same task. So in this case, we would only move the main number. In fact, with one number we can have many, many simultaneous calls. Sound confusing? if so, don’t worry…that’s where TELEPATH comes in to make it simple!
Is Telepath compatible with our existing phone system?
Well, yes and no. Compatibility will depend largely on the end-goal. If you are trying to move to a full VoIP system, then no. The TELEPATH offering is a replacement for your existing phone system. However, if you would like to benefit from the savings offered by VoIP, while keeping your existing phone system, then we would provide you with phone lines that will work with the existing system. This means that the features that you are using in your existing system will still be there as you will continue to use it. TELEPATH will simply provide the phone lines (via the internet) that will feed your current system.
